Life on Mars
A model of a space house built by one of the Future Problem Solvers
Students in the Future Problem Solvers group researched conditions on Mars and their real-life career interests and then used their research to imagine what it might be like to live in a Martian colony. Students took on roles as architects, transportation engineers, doctors, fashion designers, teachers, sports enthusiasts and biographers to share their learning with others.
You can see some of their work by downloading the files below. "Eesha Zabolga" is about a day in the life of a Martian citizen. "Floatball" is a sport invented to play in the reduced gravity of Mars. It is an .a2w file and will only play in Alice 2.2 or higher. Martian rover design: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kU6fxJuTEg

Students Practice Healthy Living Habits
On Friday, March 25, 2011, Ms. Paula Huffman from Hillsborough Yoga & Healing Arts spoke with the 4th and 5th grade Future Problem Solvers about how she has made a living helping people explore yoga as an option for living well. She answered questions about her own experiences and preparation and then led us in a 20 minute mini-class. Students enjoyed learning some fun, simple stretches that they can do at school, at home, or anywhere they might need a little pick-me-up.
Healthy Living
On Friday, March 18, 2011, Ms. Marin Shanley from the Triangle Sportsplex spoke with the 4th grade Future Problem Solvers about the importance of healthy living. She shared information from her own experiences working with people who are trying to become more active, including ways she has handled clients who are unwilling or unable to exercise more often. Students learned what it takes to become a professional trainer and they learned some simple exercises that they can do every day to help keep their bodies healthy.
Future Problem Solvers
The Future Problem Solvers class meets on Friday mornings from 8:30 until 10:00. During class time, we learn problem-solving skills, including brainstorming, framing issues, posing questions, conducting research, developing criteria, and implementing solutions. We have recently completed our Healthy Living challenge booklets to submit to the North Carolina Future Problem Solvers. Thank you to Marin Shanley from the Triangle Sportsplex and to Paula Huffman from Hillsborough Yoga and Healing Arts for
agreeing to share their work with our learners!
In April, students will begin applying their knowledge gained during the Healthy Living activity. We will investigate the effects of exercise in our own lives here on Earth and as they might play out in an eventual Martian colony.
