Alice and Scratch
At Efland-Cheeks, all second grade students are learning to use Scratch, a computer programming language developed by MIT for use with young children. By fifth grade, students begin to move from Scratch into Alice programming. Alice was originally developed by the late Dr. Randy Pausch as a tool to teach undergrads beginning programming skills. However, it proved wildly popular and accessible among non-computer science majors and is becoming more widely used in middle schools around the country.
Several of our fifth graders have taken on the FBI's Safe Online Search challenge and are working to develop original movies using Alice that can teach Internet Safety to children.
